Soda Fountain

Sounds like nearly everyone in da club is getting Soda Fountain ready for Fiday. If you're one of the lucky few who can get online, this Datel headset will allow you to scream back at the kiddies handing you your ass on a plate every single game, and then mocking you in French (as I understand it.)

£9.99 is a good few quid cheaper than Amazon and postage is an additional £1.99, which is still cheaper than the big guys even with their "Really Slow and May Actually Never Arrive" rate.

Hopefully there'll be a bright shiny copy of SF at home ready for me when I get in, and I'll think about ordering a headset in the next week or so.

I really like this game -- I'm getting to grips with the control method (still undecided about whether I should change the look/strafe/move options around a bit more, but on default they fall nicely to hand) and I'm definately enjoying it.

Loaded with atmosphere, the game is one of the better FPS creep abouts that I've played. I like the story and the characters and everything moves along at a good pace. They've broken it all up into brief but exciting missions, and it all links together in a way that keeps the action going if you want it to, but also offers you a change to throw the machine into sleep mode if you feel like spending some time in RL.

Audio is great. I just sat in a quiet seating area at work and played through PSP speakers and some kids who sat down after I did over across the room were soon speculating as to wether it was a film that they could hear. The radio chatter is done really well and I like the way you get to hear incidental dialogue that enters into the story. The goons scream real good when you burn them, and I love using the tazer like weapon to shock them to death. You can hear them gurgling as they do the jitterbug. Nice. Also, they don't all scream the same way, it doesn't seem to repeat too much.

Load times aren't anything to write home about, but the action is enough to detract from that. Pulling a PSP out of standby takes a little longer and I think they do this to cut down the between scenes loading.

I raced through the training missions, but have been encouraged to go back to redo them and beat the time limits to unlock new weapons, armour, artwork and other cool shwag.

This is a must buy. I can't wait to multiplay this.

Yay... This is fun. I spent an hour and just did the first two training missions. I unlocked the extra weapon in the assault course.

I switched to the second free-aim control scheme as it's more like the mouselook and cursor configuration I'm used to with PC FSPs, but the other way round, but I'm getting used to it.

Got it last night, after having to ask at Game (in debenhams, 5 floors up) cause it wasnt on display.

Enjoying it so far. In no way a criticism (in fact a really good thing), this is a mobile version of Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow - right down to the dart, tazer and neck breaking moves.

Not sure I have played a game with more intuitive controls right out of the box.

Multiplayer on adhoc will be great on friday.

OK, I like it so far. It will need much practising for me tho! I am pretty hopeless at it so far!

**UPDATE**
Have just spent my lunchtime playing and have completed 2 of the 4 training levels!
So there! :-p

Munchk said...

see! least we will both be fully trained!

Blitz: did you beat the best times?

blitzoid said...

I have beaten the best time on training level one, had a go at level 2 (didnt beat it), and done level 3 without wasting a shot!

andybeta said...

Finished training with all the bonuses now and moved onto the missions.

I'm still a bit panicky when the heat is on but getting better. The missions are really nice and bite sized so far which is perfect for a handheld.

Munchk said...

yea, its nicely paced.

Episode 2 part 3 here. Will have to go back to beat the training levels later. Wondering what to do if I finish this in my 10 days....

blitzoid said...

OK, all training levels completed and beaten.
Start the missions tonight!
Still loving it, tho I still lose the controls sometimes, but getting there!

Munchk said...

so how are you guys playing the mission? Run and gun, sneak?

I played the first all guns blazing, but have changed now to using the knife alot.

I started getting better results by deploying the Frickin' sharks with frickin' lasers attached to their heads (FSWFLATHH).

Once I had discovered the D-Pad combo to engage them I was away.

Co-inkeedinkalee, FSWFLATHH was the captcha word verification for this post! Triple word score!

no more coffee for ruut :D

I tend to employ the hiding against a wall, then firing off a random shot by accident because a cat jumped on my bollocks, and then panic trying to press all the buttons at once to get away from the wall and out of a crouch position whilst getting shot from every direction method.

But hey! Whatever works for you! It's all good!

Nice pic... Syphon Filter makes about as much sense as Soda Fountain now I come to think of it. I guess it means something in the context of the series?

RuutAckses said...

Accordian to the Wikipedia:

Syphon Filter is the name of a video game series published by Sony and developed by Sony Bend (formerly Eidetic), that has appeared on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable game systems. In the series, Syphon Filter is the name given to the mysterious viral weapon.

Lab results show that Syphon Filter is a deadly next-generation bio-weapon, capable of actually targeting specific ethnic groups while leaving others unharmed.

Ah! And does it look like a penis pump?

andybeta said...

Oh yeah - one other class thing about this game.. if you change the control scheme before you do the tutorials then Wossername tells you to press the new bindings instead. Not a huge thing, but I've not seen (m)any games that actually do that.

I almost always change controls, especially on FPS (thanks Ruut for that little foible) and it's really annoying when they're telling you to press Z to crouch when you've rebound the control to R-Ctrl.

*guffaws*

Just spotted the medkit in the goggle select window. I wondered why it kept saying "Not needed" when I was halfway down on my health.

Ruut - you sure you want me on your team?

RuutAckses said...

Too right, you survived that long without meds? You can heal me.

Loving the stealthy neckbreaker move. You can almost hear the bowel movement as I do it, I'm that quiet.

Seriously, doesn anyone else think the visible cold breath is very very cool. Have him peer round a corner in the snow and you see the steady breath come out. Run him about a bit and see him pant. Nice touches.

episode 3 here so far... :)

andybeta said...

So how's everyone doing now? I'm on Chapter 4 part 2 or 3 now. I don't feel like I'm being especially stealthy, although I'm getting better.

Has anyone gone back in mission mode and tried to get the unlockables? I find it hard to see how you can get five knife kills or 25 environment kills on the first level, for instance.

Having said that I have made a point of just using the knife in the missions where you're dragging the UN guy around the ruins looking for a radio.
