The Video Game Baftas

Full story here.

Some quick highlights:

Ghost Recon wins games of the year.
Loco Roco wins best character and best children's title.
Lego Star Wars II won the award for gameplay.
Shadow of the Colossus earned the artistic achievement prize.
Shadow of the Colossus also won the best action and adventure Bafta.
Electroplankton for best audio.
Tomb Raider: Legend for best original score.
Guitar Hero for soundtrack.
Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach for multiplayer.

The innovation prize went to Nintendo DS title Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain?.

Nice to see some recognition for the developers, however, I disagreee with GRAW winning best game, personally I thought Oblivion was better. Good to see SOTC and some DS titles in there too.

  1. Suprised Guitar Hero didn't get a better showing across the board really. I'd've been happy to see it walk away with GOTY, Gameplay, Audio and Soundtrack.

Good to see Shadow in there with a couple of awards. That was an outstanding game. I still think ICO and Shadow should be compulsory training for Fi Clubbers ;-)

The Lego Star Wars award looks like it's been shoehorned in just because. Best gameplay? It's not exactly innovative gameplay is it? I'd rather see it win the Children's title award, if anything.

Loco, again, is deserving, but Best Character? I guess it depends how you look at that ... a game full of nameless and identical blobs ... winning best character ... Why, I suppose that could happen. Yes. (In joke for the KD lovers there.)

Also, Loco for best children's game? Were there not any games aimed at children that were more deserving than a game simply suitable for children? If not, then there's a gap in the market right there. Are all the games aimed at children inferior?

Surprised Oblivion didn't win more (or anything)... shame. Also noticeable by their absence:

    Me and my Katamari
    GTA: VCS
Animal Crossing: WW (EU & US only maybe?)
    Mario Kart
    New Super Mario Bros
    Metroid Prime Hunters

those were just off the top of my head. (List of 2006 release here.)

  2. Really enjoying the lego game, but have to agree, the gameplay is not the strong point.

The awards seem slightly off, when compared to other panels rating games, but this is the first one and at least good exposure for such a huge industry.

Eletroplankon - best audio? Maybe in Ruuts hands, certainly not in mine!!!!

  3. Guardian Unlimited blog has a complete list of nominations for each category. Haven't had time to read it in any great detail yet though.
