Today Take2 games formally announced Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for the PSP.
Quoth Sam Houser, founder of R*:
"The success of Liberty City Stories on the PSP system was nothing short of spectacular. The incredible PSP system technology allowed us to do things we never thought possible on a handheld system and we are excited to once again give our audience a fresh experience in one of their favorite locales in the Grand Theft Auto series, Vice City. With Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories we look to once again smash expectations of portable gaming, bringing an all new story and exciting new gameplay elements to this classic setting."
At least it makes a change from all those tiresome table tennis titles.

I really hope they give us something to do with all the money we earned this time -- unless I'm missing something at the end of the game, I can't see a point to earning money. Hidden package collecting has given me more ammo than I know what to do with and I currently have more money than God.
I want to be able to buy clothes (Didier Sachs!), food, I want to be able to swim, I want to be able to level up on skills, I want a respec'-o-meter and I want to be able to accumulate houses and objects. Basically, I've found that playing GTA LCS with all the side missions and collectables makes the game huge and I want my character to be able to reflect that.
I also want Blogger to be more consistent: How come we can blockquote in the main story posts, but can't in the comments? Very poor indeed, Reeves.
i want - dont get!
GTA4 will be nice, too. I wonder if that's *only* for 360 or if it'll be on PS3 as well...?
Fun as it was LCS was a thin veneer of a game over the top of a very very good engine. The story really wasn't very deep, coherent or interesting.
The way I see it VCS will either be a new veneer over the same engine, or they'll have introduced some of the elements you talk about into the engine itself.
Given the lead time on this (plus the time that they'll already have been working on it) I think we'll see some enhancements. Consider the evolution from GTA:3 to VC (Helicopters; bigger map; motorbikes (?)) and from VC to SA (Planes; Swimming; BMX; Clothes; Property purchasing). If we see evolution at a similar rate in the PSP versions I would be satisfied. They already know that the new stuff works with the fans from the PS2 versions.
And let's face it, R* are not a company to rest on their laurels and sell a new 'skin' to an old game without making some new non-cosmetic content.
Alternatively, I would happily pay £15-£20 for VCS being just a reskin of LCS with new missions etc. but I'd really rather be paying £35 for a full-on enhanced engine.

Watch for a Bungie-style takeover from MS? R* and T2 are a hell of a lot bigger than Bungie... otherwise, I don't see R* limiting themselves to a 360-only release, especially given the tie-ins with the PSP.
Hey look, in the bit I quoted (I read it sooo carefully), Sammy boy says "exciting new gameplay elements."
Good enough for me. Unless he means an easter egged Tetris arcade machine.
October 20th Yerpe'an release date accordian to Kotaku:
"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is scheduled for an October 17, 2006 release in the US. Euros will have to content themselves by reading the optimal hooker-rape strategies on GameFaqs for three days, as it'll be coming to the continent on the 20th."
"optimal hooker-rape strategies"
Not clever, even if it's intended as a joke. That's never been what the game's about, and it's barely a strategy for extended game play anyway.
