Do You Want To...
Happy Christmas everyone.
Hi all. Our next Fi is due on 21st. The day before some other thing that some of you might know about.
I'm throwing my Baggsie in, but I want to know if anyone's up for it then or not?
Should we continue? I'm happy to, but what do you guys think?
I'm therefore putting a preliminary Baggsie on the following due date, 4th January 2008, in case we're not up for the 21st December.
Or we could just miss one week and go for the 28th?
What's your thoughts? (on this subject, not just anything. e.g. the price of chess computers!)

10k sweepstake.
Will Munchk make 10,000 gamerpoints by 2008?
Let's have a little sweepstake. Post the date on which you think Munchk will break the big 10k. Closest guess wins a Fi Club t-shirt of my own devising.

The Technical Term is "Shit The Bed"
My XBox started randomly locking recently -- the first time was after I created my Dood in Oblivion and spent ages getting his appearance just so, broke out of jail, carefully leveled up in those stinking shit pipes (wait, there was a way out through the door that the bigwigs went through? Why did I chip out through the walls behind that poster? Why did I crawl, gagging and crying through the soil pipes?) and as I emerged into the graphical beauty of the out doors_*! LOCKED.
Bastard. Lost the lot. After that it locked upon boot, and after a bit of fiddling about it gave me the Red Ringer, this close to Christmas, six months old.
Nice one.
Yeah, I know, it's happened to you guys, and yeah, I know call Game and get them to swap it, but it's a hassle.
Called Game, and they were really good about it -- the Perry just told me to take it in, straight swap, leave off all the gubbins, so I did. Not a straight swap though.
When I got it home, the first thing I noticed was that the HDD was still connected! Bonus! I attacked that with my torque6 and torque10 drivers and now I have a bare 2.5" SATA HDD waiting for the USB2 enclosure to turn up from Amazon. That puppy is getting plugged into the Mac Mini and is gonna be velcroed to the back of the TV as a Recorded TV drive.
Next thing I spot is the built in HDMI port! Checked the code and it's a 65nm one, that makes virtually no fan noise at all and from what I see online, is immune to the Glowing Red Sphincter Death.
Game has these bad boys in stock and they're not checking the 'dead' ones. Just saying.

Sleeping with the Enemy('s Sister)
This is gaming related because it's on Eurogamer, see?
Synopsis... Guy sleeps with his best mate's sister at a party. Then posts on a public forum for advice, apparently happy with the knowledge that his name and email address are in his public profile. Then he reveals that his best mate is a London Taekwondo champion.
Hilarity ensues when it becomes apparent that googling for London Taekwondo Champion has the thread itself as the second result.
BAM!

Please Let This Be Real
**SPOILERS**
If this is true it may spoil some part of SMG for you -- it tells you what happens if you get 120 and 121 stars in the Wii game. If it's not true, it's a bloody amazing mock up.

Games Of The Year?
I think it would be good for all of us to voice our favorite game(s) of the year.
Any format and don't feel you have to limit yourself to one title.
I want to hear your thoughts...was Halo3 the best yet, or just dull and over blown?
Did Bioshock raise your submarine or did it sink without trace?
Was Call of Duty 4 both good and good looking or would you rather it Forza'd off?
Tell us your thoughts (or I'll make you play Deal or no Deal!)

Fi Club - Friday 7th December
All back to mine!
Hoping to have a blast through some of the latest and some of the classic Wii games. It'd be handy if C o o k 1 e could bring a handful of wiimotes and nunchucks, Wii Play and Wii Sports SVP?
Also, if anyone has GH3 (on either 360 or Wii) then we can have a plucking good time with that too.
Bring your DS too for we may have a go at Mario Party DS.
Also - anything else you guys want to play / look at / try...

Deus Ex 3 announced
In an interview with Eidos Montreal's general manager Gamasutra learned that they have just passed the proof of concept for Deus Ex 3.
I hope this is back in the vein of the first, rather than the slightly lacklustre second game. To be honest I'd be happy playing an updated version of the first on my 360.

Wait, did they even have those ads on TV over here? Ach, ferget it, I'll go with the potty theme.
I have two screens here, so if we're going to XBL it, we may need more hardware. Alternatively, we can break out the DSs and see what's new in hook up world.

Who You Gonna Call?
Sierra Games have released a press statement regarding Ghostbusters The Video Game. A pan-platform game, it debuts on the 360 in Autumn 08 and will call on the talents of Ackroyd and Ramis to write the event-driven story line and all of the original crew will be back for the voice acting.
Check the official site for a very lean teaser video and a few screenies.
I really really really hope this game works out.

Fall Update announced
Apparently the Fall Update is going to include the XBox original downloads code, so that means that December 4th will be the big day.
Still hoping for divx / xvid support. With PS3 getting it, surely that forces MS's hand?

Happy Birthday Dear XBL!
Xbox Live is 5 years old today! Happy Birthday XBL!
To celebrate MS are letting every single XBL user download a free arcade game tomorrow (16th November) so don't forget to sign on and do so. Not sure at this point if it's one particular arcade game, or a free for all. I suspect the former.
Also, as of December 4th we'll be able to download full original XBOX games through the marketplace at a cost of 1200 MicroBucks a pop (that's about £8 in real money.) Launch titles include Halo, Psychonauts, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fable.
I might pick up Halo, although I suspect I could get the disk cheaper if I shopped around. Also Psychonauts is well worth a look if you've not played it.

Super Mario Galaxy - A Dialogue
Ruut and I have both had a chance to play Super Mario Galaxy for a couple of hours. Here's our conversation regarding our first impressions of Nintendo's latest Mario game:
s u d 0: so SMG.. you're further ahead than I am
Ruut: I want to play some more!
R: I *did* play for 3 and a half hours
R: that was fun
S: I played for a couple of hours I think
S: I can't put my finger on why it has that wonder of SM64
S: but Sunshine didn't
R: it's so polished
R: so beautiful
R: and the physics are bang on, you know everything in the world, all the objects exist for a reason
S: did you play Sunshine?
R: no
S: It didn't flow very well and although it had its moments it was ultimately quite a frustrating experience
R: but I know the feeling -- when they released SMB2
S: it didn't feel like a Mario game.
R: which was a rehash of a Japanese game called Doki Doki panic
R: it also didn't feel like a Mario game, and it lacked cohesion
R: and there were parts to it that you thought "What's this got to do with Mario?"
S: Once I understood how SMG was going to work I could see the logical succession from SM64 that just wasn't there in Sunshine
R: yeah
S: It sounds like SMB2 and Sunshine suffered from the same problem
R: there was a point to things in SM64
S: SM64 was so damn clever, and Galaxy is the same. I keep coming back to the word 'wonder'
R: in SMG, the progression works, the story works, the look and feel is bang on, I'm excited just remembering it
S: It's redefined platforming again, in the way that SM64 did
R: I was in Tesco on Saturday and I saw SMG on the cover of a mag and it felt like it feels when you've seen a really good action escapist film the night before
S: It's taken it to the next level, in a way I struggled to visualise from the videos
S: I wasn't sure, or couldn't see, how it was going to work... like the running upside down thing
R: it's so much more than the previews showed. Like, in the vids I thought it all looked disjointed, jumping from world to world, but in the game with the story line behind it it makes sense
R: Where you press A to get beamed to the blue stars and you follow a path that way, puzzles like that give me such a sense of achievement
R: it's like a Mario Zelda game
S: Especially with the fixed camera, all the things that are usually so frustrating in a game - moving in an unatural orientation, with a fixed viewpoint
R: the nunchuk has a button to make the view flip
R: and the first person view is glorious
R: I stop and look at the view a lot
S: but I guess, like SM64 you can't move like that?
R: no, no movement in FPP
R: but it's great for collecting star bits
R: stop, look about and point at the bits to pick them up
S: When I first died and got put back at the start of that Galaxy, I thought "Oh no."
S: but it wasn't a chore
S: and in fact the coin collecting encourages replay, just like SM64 did
R: the galaxies have rooms, too, and you have to do the room a different way each time
R: but they change the objects in the rooms to make it work differently
R: not room as in four walls, but you know, a connecting level
S: Ah yes.
S: I loved the first boss... the Dino Egg
S: I was going to say I was grinning, but then I was grinning all the way through
R: oh yeah, figuring him out was great, and the animation was lovely, the RAGE
R: I was grinning too and LOLingS: I was wondering about the planets, or comets or whatever they're called
S: once you start running over them, they seem suddenly to become larger
S: they take a lot longer to circumnavigate
S: then the appearance seems to warrant
S: do you think that's clever scaling or a real illusion?
R: they're all different sizes
R: I didn't notice that...
R: I thought they seemed right to scale
S: I felt it straight away on the first puzzle planet... where you have to change the yellow switches to blue
R: that was fun
S: maybe it's just me
S: there hasn't been a rock I haven't completely scoured yet
R: no, I did that, too
R: it seemed a waste not to
S: exploration doesn't become a chore
R: and from the beginning I started to collect bits, even before they said
R: oh the village leading up to the caste from SM64
R: it was glorious
S: yes - in fact, when I accidentally catapulted off or climbed the vine to the next rock, before I'd completed my recce it bothered me
S: so - any downsides that you could find, or foresee?
R: not really
R: there were times when I plummeted off a ledge and thought "that's not fair..."
R: but that's just me
S: yeah.. the ledge thing. It didn't happen a lot to me, but the black-hole planets seem to be worse for it
S: there's no clear indication as to when you're going to fall and when you're going to flip
S: Hence I approach many of the precipices quite timidly
R: Yeah, I know what you mean
S: so he gets to do the fingertip catch if it's a drop
S: do you think you could get bored with the format?
S: it just seems so open to invention
S: i can imagine the developers coming up with this idea, say, one day before lunch
S: and by 3pm, when they'd realised what they'd come up with...
R: it's prolly one of the finest gaming moments I can remember
S: can you imagine the brainstorming sessions?
R: just pure fun
R: oh yeah, it must be great to do
R: it's a killer app
R: that, zelda and metroid justify the console's existence
R: if they do nothing else worth while, they at least gave it it's history making games
S: is it too hardcore for the new gamer bunch?
R: no
R: it's very gentle at the start
S: i wonder.. like metroid it takes advantage of conventions that we know about
S: from 20 years of gaming
R: it leads you to each new move in a very Shigeru way
S: I think it is a lot more friendly than Metroid, overall though
R: some of it may confuse, like hitting and re-hitting ? blocks
R: like, why would you do that?
R: plus crouch jumping and wall jumping
R: but you would discover them
R: and we dont have a book
S: The slide-flip was quite a hard move to pull off in SM64 at first
S: but I think it's much easier on the Wii controls
S: they've tuned that in nicely
R: yeah
R: I liked the waggle to pull me off toward the next planetoid
S: heh... I remember one bit that I loved.. on a giant five-point star
S: with a blue pull star on each point
R: yeah, floating towards the middle -- timing and selection
S: and you had to switch direction mid-flow in order to get to the center
S: also - there are stars in space that seem to be there purely to extend your journey
S: no other reason but to make Mario go Whheeeeee and do an extra loop
S: there's a lot there for someone with previous knowledge of the genre.
R: there are the stars that you waggle to activate in deep space, you can fly past, or if you time the waggle right when he's flying, you can divert to a new path
S: Shig's just gone "Here you are guys, I know you'll like this."
S: and a new player wouldn't even see it, let alone get it
R: the music in the underground pipe... rooms
R: "banna banna banna"
S: yeah... following that path
R: I love how he grabs the stars when he's won them too
R: he slaps them in a different way sometimes
S: I hadn't even noticed that
S: To be honest this is the game that Zelda and Metroid didn't quite manage to be.
S: And by that I mean - the game that makes the Wii.
S: to be fair Twilight Princess is a Gamecube gameS: But despite the fact that Corruption is technically spot on, it felt lacking in some ways
S: Corruption is strange... it's a pixel perfect Metroid game. You really can't fault it (as long as you're right handed.)
S: But there's a spark missing. There's nothing new there, even given the brilliant control scheme.
S: Is it better than SM64?
R: Galaxies?
S: yeah
R: yeah, so much better
R: this is better than Super Mario World
S: it's not such a technical leap forward, but it seems like a quantum leap in how to think about building a platform game
R: it's not about the technical side, never has been with Mario, it's the fact that it's so well finished off
R: so complete
R: and it's the little touches
S: We have so much praise and we've only played for a total of 4 hours between us.
R: I reckon three hours is enough time to know a game
S: so - when are you getting your Wii?
R: LOL
S: you looking forward to babysitting again? ;)
R: fo def
S: I can't wait to get home tonight.
R: I'll bet
S: I was so annoyed at falling asleep.
R: LOL
S: I was tempted to grab a coffee at midnight so I could carry on
R: did he wake you up? "Hey! What-a-da-fuck?"
R: lets-a-go
S: Mario is dangling by his fingertips while I doze!

Fingertip Wii Control
I really like what this guy's done using an IR LED array, a Wiimote and some reflective tape.
His hardware is a tad cludgey, but it works surprisingly well and could be bundled officially and cheaply using just the guts of the wiimote, leaving out the motion sensing, buzzer and speaker etc (so you don't tie up your existing hardware) and a set of nice thimble-like fingertip covers. I'm sure it would make a great enhancement to the Wii control methods.

"For Those About To Rock......."
....We give you a Price.
Well, almost.
Amazon.com have Rock Band listed as $169.99, released on 20/11/07.
Linkage! Clikkit bitches!
Amazon.co.uk and Play do not have a price or date as yet. This should mean about £99.99 in the UK but will probably end up being £119.99 to £139.99.
Still, should be better than we were speculating the other week.
The set only contains one guitar though, along with microphone, drums and game.
Should be supported with down-loadable content in the future.
Metallica have, apparently, signed up to allow quite a few of their tracks to be used, as well as Enter Sandman which is on the game disc.
Looking at the included tracks, there's lots there worth playing, in my humble rock-addled view.
And with Guitar Hero III out soon as well, my pants are near saturation!( "Nurse....Nurse....I'm wet again. Please change me!" )
I'll still be beaten by Mrs. Cookie, though.
Who would have thought that she'd turn out to be such a wizard on the (plastic imitation) guitar?

TITWTWB - 11 November
Ok... Here we go for another TITWTWB (pron. tit-wut-wub). The games vying for our 10-second-spanned attention this week are here.
First up is the mighty midget; Nintendo's tiny trojan - the DS. Only one title jumps out at me this week for the DS, and it's not Animal Paradise ("Animal Paradise allows you to make friends with and earn the love of 18 different types of animal on your uncle's farm." - I think I saw the film at a party once.) This week's eye-grabbing title for the DS is Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, the two world famous characters together at last ready to battle it out at the Olympic Games. There's no real word on whether this is a straight-faced Track And Field game or if you're going to be firing off spin attacks in the 100 metres and munching performance enhancing fungi in the middle of the high jump event. As with last week's Beowulf and Simpsons, I'm wary of event specific tie-ins, ever since the KP Skips-inspired Clumsy Colin Action Biker game on the Spectrum.
The obvious choice for the PC next week is Crysis from Crytek, the makers of Far Cry, on an all-new CryEngine 2. There aren't any online reviews for this yet, just a couple of mag reviews, both in the 90s. What we can see is that the graphics are gorgeous. The gameplay is mooted to quite open-ended, allowing you to approach levels in a variety of ways, employing various tactics, enhanced by nano-suit and weapon mods. Some superb enemy AI rounds off what sounds like a very very nice FPS. Online multiplayer supports up to 32 players too. This is almost enough to make me think about getting my PC back up to scratch.
PS2 barely warrants a mention with Jackass The Game, International Cricket Captain III and Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey.
Just two releases on the PS3 this time round: Medal of Honor: Airborne and Assassin's Creed (more of which below.) MoH:A follows the fortunes of the 82nd Airborne division as they parachute into a massive area with each new mission. Maybe this will be different enough from other WWII shooters to feel fresh and interesting. The 360 version was met with middling approval, reviews picking up on stale mission objectives and difficult and unforgiving gameplay.
Sony's sexy shiny lozenge (which is getting sexier and shinier by the month), the PSP, is graced with two new releases next week. Firstly is the instantly dismissable International Cricket Captain III, and secondly is the could-be-interesting Warriors of the Lost Empire. An action/RPG slasher featuring two player co-op and short load times.
The 360 bag contains the F.E.A.R Files, a bundle of the Perseus Mandate and Extraction Point add-ons for F.E.A.R. I suppose if you've played F.E.A.R then you've already heard about these expansions, and considered purchasing them. I'm not really able to get worked up about them. Additionally we have a poorly reviewed World Championship Poker, and a (presumably) slipped Beowulf makes another appearance. Cream of the crop for Microsoft's chunky white hoover impressionist is Assassin's Creed. AC goes straight onto my must-play list (hovering corpses or not) with it's open-ended gameplay, impressive graphics and large city-based play areas. And so on to the awards... I think I made a compositional error by putting the Turd of the Week at the end of last week's synposis, so this time I'm doing that first. Sorry DS, I'm picking on you again this week for the woefully daft and bizarre My Pet Dolphin. Pet sims have proven to be big money for Nintendo, with Nintendogs helping to launch the portable to its dizzying instant success. Other publishers quickly jumped on board with Dogz and Catz and the like. The Sims franchise followed with Sims 2: Pets. But have we really run out of standard domestic animals so quickly? What more unlikely pet could you wish for than a dolphin? Large, heavy, smelly, wet, dangerous and distinctly uncuddly, I can't think of an animal I'd like to share my home with less. Perhaps that's the point - you'll never have a pet dolphin, so it makes it worth simulating. What's the point of simulating a rodent you could pick up from Pets At Home for less than the price of the game cart? Hmm.... no, I won't change my mind. My Pet Dolphin you are Turd of the Week.
Poor old Assassin's Creed. Any other week it would've earned my highly prized Thumbs Up Game of the Week award. Unfortunately for Ubisoft there's a little unassuming console called the Wii. And on that console this week is a game I've been waiting nearly a decade to play - the spiritual successor to Super Mario 64... Ladies and Gentlemen I give you s u d 0's Game of the Week: Super Mario Galaxy. Already at the top of the metacritic Wii charts, two points above Zelda at 97/100, it has garnered four 100-point score reviews proving that Mario is as relevant today as ever. The disk is ready and waiting next to my Wii, but I've promised myself that I will finish Metroid Prime 3 before starting on this. Temptation is growing though, and my will is weak. It's only a matter of time...
Sorry guys - you knew I was going to do that didn't you?

Gamercards With Status
You may have noticed the slightly updated Gamercards down the right hand margin, courtesy of MyGamerCard.net. I think the information that MGC provide is slightly improved over the xbox.com link and the cards look a bit nicer too.
You'll see that mine contains my XBL status as well. You can get this on yours by following a sign-up procedure that approaches that of joining the Masons.
First off, go to MyGamerCard.net and sign up. They'll do the obligatory send-you-an-email-with-a-validation-link thing in it, so use a real email address. Also - use your proper XBL ID.
Then they send you a Private Message at the Xbox.com Forums (NOT an Xbox Live Message!) to which you reply, or you can log-in to MGC.net to initiate the message yourself. Once your XBL validity has been confirmed in this way you should check your profile at MGC and tick the four boxes at the bottom to enable this data in your gamercard.
This isn't really as arduous as it sounds and easier than I made it, as I didn't realise the PM came on the xbox forum rather than XBL.
MGC.net also have an ace gamerpic scout to help you find out where the cool gamerpics come from, how common they are and also to get a preview of a pack before you buy it on Marketplace.

GTA IV in April.
Wii60.com report that GTA IV is appearing on shop release sheets and promo boxes are arriving in store.
The date on the sheet is April 15 '08. It's a long time to wait, but then there's a lot of other stuff about at the moment.

Ready for the big one.
Having done Levels II and III of Halo 3 twice on Heroic and not gotten the achievements for either, nor the 250GP completion award, I'm about done with single player - I've seen the end, Finished The Fight - where're my fecking gamerpoints? Anyone want to join up for Legendary Co-op? Let's fix a couple of evenings and times. We're going to need three or four of us, and I don't mind not being Mister Chief.
If not, I'll be playing Metroid Prime 3 again, readying my Wii for Mario Galaxy.

TITWTWB - 4 November
Or... This Is The Week That Will Be, starting 4 November.
In a new excuse to waste time and further delay fixing that pesky Domino server s u d 0 is going to cast his beady eyes over next week's UK releases, picking a few notables for each platform, the Game Of The Week and the Turd Of The Week.
Here are next week's hopeful candidates.
For the 360 we have Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, NASCAR 08, WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008, Beowulf and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Beowulf looks good but as it is a movie tie-in it thus wavers on the knife edge of mediocrity depending entirely on how the box-office goes for the film.
For the Wii this week's selection includes Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. This is the first time Lego has come to the Wii and I can't see that it will take the old-timer's favourite tennis-sim console into new heights of originality. Endless Ocean (the diving sim) looks like one of those non-games that's fun for about 10 minutes but ends up gathering dust on top of the DVD player within days. With the WWE game and My Word Coach also on the roster, it's hardly the most exciting week for Wii owners.
PSP owners see the ubiquitous WWE Smackdown and The Simpsons Game featuring the actual voice talents from the series, but probably no plot, and no funnies. Much like the movie then.
And what do the lucky DS gamers get next week? Strawberry Shortcake: The Four Seasons Cake, Deal or no Deal, and WWE Smackdown. Back to the 'homebrew' there then.
PS3, PC and PS2. Do we care about these enough to write about them? If you do, let me know and I'll include them next week.
All in all a fairly humdrum week I think. Ignoring Munchk's penchant for role-playing oiled-up beefcake actors aka pro wrestlers (never forget) I think I'm going to have to roll with Simplicitly's in-depth Beta-test preview and favour CoD4 for the 360 this week. Despite that fact that a) It's another CoD game and 2) it's still too close to Halo 3 for another multiplayer online battle sim, I'm naming Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as my Game of the Week.My Turd of the Week is going to Deal or no Deal. Even granted that it doesn't feature the diminutive, jumper-wearing, minge-faced Edmunds I can't imagine playing what is essentially a random number generator for any length of time. Most modern calculators or a simple batch script will give you just as many minutes of psuedo-random fun. Plus you can play it free online now anyway.
Glad to see that Metacritic backs me up here. Nice scores, lads.

Another flukey kill / death in Halo 3. I have just one question...
Is it all that hard to find decent music?

Prior to FiClub... Halo 3 mini-tactics
Prior to this weeks' Fi, for which I should be up for some remoting, if you aren't all playing something 4UP exclusively, thought I'd post my H3 thoughts and findings from a total-n00b point of view, as Halolll is the first time I've gotten involved in any online shenanigins in earnest, and I thought I'd try and maybe just encapsulate my top tips.
Don't mind what sort of games we play, Ranked is all well and good, but it is limited to 4UP teams, and if we want to play maybe with anotherdad, or some of the other groovesters from our friends lists, social will allow us to do this, whilst still allowing us to hone our shooting and teamwork skills. If there are a few things that I have come to learn really help with H3 they are the following:
1. In team games, stay close together. Always. *sometimes* on some maps it helps to have one player roaming to outflank or surprise the enemy, but more likely this just leaves them isolated and prone to getting killed by being outnumbered. Certainly in games where kill-count is how you win, it is at least as important to stay alive as it is to shoot enemies... acting in concert with your teamies helps with this, because you can alternately peek out from cover and shoot... allowing shields to recharge, enemy bullets to be distracted from focusing on one target, and a team mate to maybe finish kills that you have started in the event that you die.
2. Practice playing other real people - mostly practicing shooting. Using fancy weapons is all well and good, but there are few skills as valuable as being able to hold the crosshair over your target whilst weilding the Assault Rifle. The more you do it, the better you get at it, and it is a skill that transfers to many of the other weapons.
3. Knowing where the weapons are on the maps is something you can learn gradually by playing them through, and understanding which weapons are more effective.
4. Take Cover. Not always effective, but having somewhere to run to or drop into or hide behind can prevent you being killed, meaning no score for the enemy, and they might even chase you in, where your teamies can put them under fire... knowing which way they are coming.
5. Laugh. Taking it seriously just makes losing annoying and winning not so joyful. It isn't a job - there are always going to be better teams, and certainly while we are still learning teamwork, weapons and maps, it is best to take it wieh a pinch of salt, or you'll be put off playing forever.
tha'sit.

GT Mobile not dead?
Take this with a massive pinch o'salt, but Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi reckons that after GT5 hits the PS3, PD will go on to release GTM. Suuuure they will.
"We're just talking ideals here – but it would be nice if we were able to allow people to compete whether they're on the road or in their living room on the PS3, compete in the same race. Even though the visual qualities will be different depending on which hardware they're on it would be nice if we could allow for that. Technically, we think we should be able to."
I know what would be ideal, how about you just release the fucking game instead of talking about it?

DS TV Tuner
Akihabara News is carrying a story about the new Official Nintendo TV Tuner finally being released on November 8th in Japan.
The tuner is digital and receives the 1seg broadcasting service which is designed for mobile devices. The tuner fits into slot 1 and displays video on the upper screen, with the touch screen used as a remote control.
Price is said to be about 41 Euros. I think that if Nintendo released a DVB-M version in the UK, I'd pay about 50 quid for the pleasure of watching TV on the move. Sure, I'm not as out and about as I used to be, but imagine how nice it would be for IckleRuut and the other 2nd Gen 'Fi Clubbers if you could hand them a DS Lite, R4 and a TV Tuner on a long car journey or camping / caravanning trip?
We'd like them to 'enjoy the view' but I remember from experience that the view won't hold your attention for hours on end. Personally, if you so much as show me a picture or page in a moving vehicle I'll decorate the inside of the windscreen with lunch, but IckleRuut can already happily look at picture books on the move.

Guitar Hero 3 Demo
There's a GH3 demo on the Tony Hawks Proving Ground disk. It's not available on marketplace (yet), but you can play it nevertheless, by burning the demo from here to a normal DVD. It then appears in your demo list with all your others.
Demo song list:
Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Pat Benatar
Lay Down
Priestess
Even Flow
Pearl Jam
Rock You Like A Hurricane
Scorpions
The Metal
Tenacious D
Apparently it works fine on an unmodded 360.

Number twos
It looks like Valve's The Orange Box has edged Halo 3 and Bioshock off the top of the Metacritic charts. Whilst this is probably due to the perceived value of five games in one box (Halflife2 plus HL2 Episodes 1 and 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2) I think the hype has been markedly lower for TOB than either of the other two.
TOB has a Metascore of 97, whilst Bioshock nestles in just below at 96. Halo 3 brings up the rear with a comfortable 94 (remaining equal with Gears and Oblivion.)
This goes on my ever growing to-do list.
If anyone's wondering what the Portal thing is about, there's a nifty 2-D flash primer here.

I'll admit it 's jealousy, but I still hate being killed by those guys.
Here's a chart of all the armour types for John Spartan:
EVA looks cool.

EOD reminds me of Hammerstein from the ABC Warriors.

"Is There Anybody Out There.......?"
Hi all.
Well if no one else wants it (hint hint), I'll bagsie this FiDay 12th October.
Usual time and place. Bring your bits and pieces and DS's and etc.
But I'm calling a cease-fire on snacks, just bring some dips.
See you then.
Also, I've noticed that my local Blockbusters have recently had posters up advertising Bioshock and Halo 3 for £34.99 each.
This is the cheapest price I've seen, including online.
If they keep putting big new releases at this price, they might be worth checking out for fourth coming games.

Holding Out For A Hero!
I was having a quick look at Drawn To Life on the DS. One of the first things you need to do is create a hero to save a village...
So I thought, who better than...
I'm playing this because I'm stuck on Zelda until the Post Office pull their finger out and deliver my headset/mic for my DS. My built-in mic is broken and I'm stuck in a cave where I have to shout for help.
Anyway, Drawn To Life is a fairly simple, but enjoyable and engaging platformer-cum-RPG. The gimmick is that you get to draw a lot of the assets... your 'hero' for starters - you can eventually have three different characters and you can edit them endlessly anyway - we're now running around as one of our cats in a red shirt and yellow shorts. You also get to paint your vehicles and draw springs, platforms etc.
The best thing is that I am playing this co-operatively with Little s u d 0 jr. She's mostly doing the stylus work - colouring in (I can draw and lock a template for her to fill or scribble over), or using it to clean up the evil black goo that's tainting the world. It's working really very well and she really understands what she's doing. She's happy to watch me do the jumping and shooting (snowballs, don't worry!)
This is the first videogame we've really played properly together and I'm really stoked that she's pestering me to pick up and play. I'm also pleased that this seems to be a game that will engage both of us. It's simple enough for her to understand and for me not to get frustrated with repeating sections (and her bored), yet complex enough to keep me interested. A very well balanced little game.

Fi Club (West Country Chapter) Halolll report
Well, we certainly enjoyed last nights games...
I particularly enjoyed the 'I just happen to be American', 'Never mind the rankings, look at their names', 'Veto the map or I'm gonna go hard' and that one game on Isolation where we absolutely mullered the opposition.
Some of those Last Resort games where we lost 50v48 and 50v46 were also good, tight matches, where our teamwork skillz really came together - I just think that like a lot of the teams we fought, whether through respawn points or wandering-off-sickness, we 'sometimes' got split up and made easier targets.
Loved getting to grips with that Banshee on Valhalla - racked up a tidy 15 kills in it I think, although if sud0's batteries had not run out I think our aerial domination would have brought the game to a close earlier and we would have won it in the end.
Great fun though - looking forward to more organised chaos, and I think we nearly convinced Henry he has to get a 360 for sure, he had a great laugh.

'Twas the night two nights after Halo Day...
Hi all.
First, I'd like to say what a great time I had last time out at ruut's.
What a Laugh!
I'm really glad Sud0 had a good day as well.
I'm sure I speak for all who attended.
Well, I can't promise to live up to that but I'll be hosting next.
Fi'Day 28th September, you know where and when.
Bring drinks and (a few) snacks, etc.
See you there, perhaps.

Busy Times
A 'Master Chief' signed up to my forum on Tuesday. He never posted anything, so I created a new ID 'Arbiter' and sent him the following PM
Subject: Tally Ho!
Once more unto the breach, dear friend!
See you on the battlefields!

Today The Abiter received the following correspondence
Arbiter,
The Chief is away fighting the alien scum right now but he did take time out of his busy schedule to ask me to send you a quick note of gratitude for your recent correspondance. The Chief personally chose you to join his Flood Fighters Fan Club and as luck would have it the price of annual membership is currently down 15%....Finish the Fight only £79.99

Halo 3 Emblem Compo
If there's one thing we can all agree on it's the need for a unifying emblem for all Fi-ers, so I propose a quick'n'dirty compo to settle the matter.
Everyone who wants to can create an emblem in-game, copy it from their Bungie.net profile page and submit it in the comments. Anyone who's not a blog member but who'll be playing with us (Fictionkite, BigUpStu, etc.) let me know and I'll post it for you.
Then at some point in the near future, we'll all vote for our favourites and the majority vote wins. We can then all use that as our emblem when playing in a team.
There is an emblem generator online HERE. It's clear from the generator that your secondary armour colour (the flashes on the arms etc.) does affect the emblem - it's the colour that the Emblem Background takes on.

Game awards 2007
In an effort to not constantly read about halo news at work, I see the BAFTA game nominations are up. Linky!
In reality these mean very little for the average gamer, but are there any glaring omissions? Anything anyone would like to see recognised? Any thoughts on Wii sports sweeping the board?

Halo 3? Not So Fast!
Anyone hoping to indulge in a massive Halo 3 session over the next few days better make sure they're picking up their game locally. Reports are sliding in to Fi HQ that many of the special edition disks are being ruined by badly designed packaging, and rumours abound that even pauper edition disks are afflicted with disk read errors. This has pretty much made my mind up to get the game from Tesco to facilitate rapid replacement. All that can stop me now is RROD!

Call Of Duty 4 Beta - Played!
Have had a bit of a blast on the CoD4 beta, and just wanted to detail a few of the features
Got my key quite late in the day, so only have the rest of this week to have a run through the beta... thank goodness there aren't any other games coming out to spoil my fun... oh... wait!
The beta basically allows you to play Team Deathmatch, Free-for-all and a couple of other modes I haven't played. Free-for-all does what it says on the tin, and Team Deathmatch can be arranged either by choosing teams or letting the server random you up with other players.
The playstyle is mostly quick run-and-gun, with satisfying weapons, minimal grenade supplies in either frag or flashbang flavours. Soldier classes affect which two weapons you start with, though weapons from downed enemies can be collected.
The real joy is the Experience points system, which allows you to 'level up' your soldier - in the beta this can take you from the starting rank 1 to a maximum rank 16. Levels allow you to do all sorts of stuff, like upgrade the weapons available to you and to access additional soldier classes. The more people you kill and matches you win, the more Exp you earn. Your basic soldier class is pretty much 'Assault' - this sees you starting with a burst-fire-only M16 and a pistol, but as you earn Exp, you can unlock weapons like the AK47 fully automatic, as well as seemingly loads of other sub- and heavy- machine guns, sniper rifles, shotguns and so on. With these weapons, you can also unlock add-ons like underslung grenade launchers, red dot laser sights and other hardware.
The Exp system also allows you to earn 'perks' in various categories, such as making your soldier take more bullets before he dies, faster reloading or invisibility to enemy radar. Or special weapons like a 2-shot RPG, C4 charges or extra grenades. Or improvements like allowing you to shoot through walls, sprint faster, fire pistol after having been killed for cheeky revenge antics and so on.
Whilst these improvements seemingly make the battlefield a bit uneven to a level 1 beta-startup Grunt, none of them really stop you from getting on and shooting people and earning some for yourself. There is an in-depth create-a-class system for customizing your spawn trooper - this becomes available when you reach Level 4.
In-game kill streaks - murder without being murdered, award in-game advantages. 3 kills allows you to trigger a radar sweep to reveal enemy positions, 5 kills awards you an airstrike, triggered and targeted in a mini-map, and 7 kills allows you to call in a Helicopter Gunship, which hunts down and shoots at any enemies out in the open. More than that I didn't find out, but it is a slick and easy to use feature, and you are credited with kills made by the airstrikes or helo gunners.
Technical stuff aside, it is just fun. In only my third game I found myself in possession of a sniper rifle that a victim had just dropped - I squinted down the scope at the back of my next prospective victim's head, only to realise that the area effect of an airstrike was bursting just feet from me - the screen was rocking, smoke was billowing in, and it was impossible to steady the aim, so I squeezed the trigger and was pleased to see the bullet strike home in the ass of my target. Pure joyous fluke.
Oh... and the killcam! For a few seconds between respawn, you get to see from your killers-eye view to see exactly how you were nailed - which helps to dispel the idea that you were killed and it wasn't fair, although the very rare cases of lag I experienced occasionally showed me as not having fired a shot, whereas on my screen I had put 30 rounds into their face.
Games were quick and easy to find in the lobby, and I really feel that Halolll has a decent plate to step up to now. Looking forward to getting some H3 games with you lot on Fiday. Remote for me.

Call of Duty 4 Beta code
I have come into possession of a CoD4 Beta test code (for Xbox 360). However the beta finishes on Sunday and I simply won't have time to play it between now and then, with Metroid to finish and H3 to play from Wednesday onwards.
First to post here can have my code.
Thanks to Simplicitly for pointing out the application process. It's a shame I didn't realise it was going to finish this week. Good timing Activision!

Thanks fellas!
Thanks for a great night on Friday, guys. The pressies were very much appreciated. I've had to recharge the helicopter about a dozen times so far as everyone is captivated by it. I've not had a chance to try the keypad yet. I meant to send out some messages last night but accidentally fell asleep instead. I'll hassle you all with my speedy typing on MSN tonight, hopefully. Pretty sure that I'll be putting the money towards a new pair of shades as mine were lifted off my desk at work last week, which is pretty sickening.
'Twas a good night, gameswise. Flatout party mode is ideal for that situation, and picking and choosing the XBLA demos is good too. Might have to have a look at Mario Party next time for mini-games.

The XBLA Jizzphest Continues...
More XBLA awesomeness announced -- Hudson is currently promoting Omega 5, a 'true next gen 3D shooter'. Me likey.
Hudson is boasting that Omega Five is the first truly next-gen shooter, due in large part to some gorgeous art design sprucing up fully 3D levels. The old-school gameplay will also be spiced up by giving players the choice of several characters that each have unique attacks and weapons. Different character combinations can be mixed and matched to find the perfect partner for the games online co-op mode.
I can not wait.

Hi Res Rez!
Much coolness bathed our little planet today when Tetsuya Mizuguchi, former president of UGA and current chief creative officer of Q Entertainment announced that Rez will be coming to XBLA during 2K8Q1! Awesome!
We are excited to announce that Rez will be given a new life, this time in digital form. The game will be presented in hi-definition and will be accessible to thosewho did not have a chance to experience Rez the first time around. Personally, Rez has been and will always be a lifelong concept. I hope to take what I learned from the experience of creating the original game and look forward to taking it to a whole new level in the future.
Awesome!

So you end up at Panasonic HQ and they have a 360 there hooked up to a Big Fuck-Off Telly, and why not?
I love the comments in the linked thread.
"Big ass TV + XBox 360 = still a losing system."
"He'd have used a PS3, but they needed 3 games to test with."
"DUDE!!! STEP BACK!!! FFS!!!"
"As someone has already mentioned, please step away from the TV, it will get quite hot and you will puke your brains out."
I can't imagine how you'd lift one of those bad boys onto the wall mounts. What a rokin system.

One, two, miss a few, ninety nine, one hundred.
Brethren, 'sup?
But hark, you say, 'tis Ruut, and he is getting ready to lay down another scintillating host post on us. I shall put aside my other distractions and close three out of five IM sessions to listen, for it is sure to be fun.
Not so fast, this ain't gonna be like those other posts, this is different. I can host, and fo' sho' I is winding up for a full on bagsie, but not this week. I propose instead, my chums, a time shift type thing where we wait a week to get the Fi Club schedule back on track as it is laid down in Jaz's Red Filofax Of All Things Time Related. July's weekly shenanigans made us go out of sync, and it is time to put things right, time to even the balance of the 'Fi.
So I roll a D20 and wait for a reply. No reply means you're cool mit dis shii and I can go ahead and bagsie for a week on Friday (August 31st). Fukkit, reply anyway, we aint heard from some of you doods in a while and we like to rip the pee out of your spellink.
Thinkabout it: a week later means your carpal tunnel can heal and you can at least have a fighting chance at the Track N Field.
++ UPDATE!++
h i r 0 san is going to do his thing. See the comments for more deets. Do it.

This is surely a job for Eldon...
As much as I love GH and GH2, I reckon that sometimes the little ukulele-sized guitar controller is kind of embarrassing.
A perfect excuse to break out a massive tub of our favourite Danish snap together block system and build a gee-tar big enough for a normal regular sized human being.
Rejoice! A guide to building one out of Lego has been created by the boffins on the intarnets.
Awesome, how cool. Now who do we know who's a whiz with Lego?

Arthur Dent tried this already.
CheapyD over at Cheap Ass Gamer uses the magic of moving pictures to show us how to fix a RROD 360 with a towel. Yes.
God damn, that's a big TV.

Housekeeping Update
After a great sesh at Cookie's on Friday, I took some time out on Saturday to come in here to post a "great 'Fi Club, man, thanks fo' hosting" comment, and while I was here decided to open the windows and let some fresh air in, pick up Munchk's socks and clear out all H i r 0 's 'ahem' magazines. You boys.
While I was in the dashboard I looked at some of the Blogger Buzz and saw how things were progressing over at the beta labs and decided to load up the kart with some goodies and give the ol' blog a bit of an overhaul. It's no probs, like. It's my job.
Now I know she look hot on the surface man, but this blog, she purring like the keeten under the hood now, ese. I migrated us over to the new layout system and bolted a few plug ins over on the sidebar. Take a look, I did a pretty good job, IIDSSM. Some oldies have been improved, some newbies been added -- you like it, neh?

Let me know if your interested or if you'd rather be doing something else.
Usual time.
Or would you all rather play from home?

'Fi Month Continues...
You know how when it's winter and we're all like, "oh I'm so bummed" and everyone is feeling low n stuff and we grab our passports and head to sunnier climes or roll out the daylight box and sit in front of it or take copious amounts of recreational pharmaceuticals just to lift the fug and make us feel better?
This month is like that. No really. After such a poopy summer, rain, wind, floods n shit, we're all feeling a need to lift moods and have a gosh darnit good time, and we appear to have had a 'Fi Club for three weeks running, which is, like, a record or whatever.
Well bum out no more, doods! This coming Friday follows suit with all the others in the fashion what I have just mentioned and is also a 'Fiday! Yes!
Word has come out from behind the Great Banking Firewall in That London that Cap'n Munchk has cleared it with Mrs Munchk and he's already polishing his big pink tower in excited readiness. H i r 0 has come up with a vehicle ("I need that shit you're driving") and I have bagsied shotgun, so all is right with the world once again and we can face the mind crushing wage slavery that is the end of this damp dark week.

Mental DS Slidey Type Thing
Casting aside my first thoughts of "how will I pack another damn gaming add-on into my already bulging sack of joy?" I present this here video for you to click, peruse and marvel at.
Just when you thought the DS couldn't get any stranger.
Watched it? Now tell me you don't want it.
OK, *apart* from Blitzoid, tell me you don't want it.

Two out of Three Ain't Bad
That's right... this week's Fi Club is back in my lair following a minor detour via the Ruutcave. Due to the fact that Mrs h i r 0 is off galavanting around town, literally leaving me holding the baby (hello baby h i r 0), I am claiming my second Fi Club in three sessions.
Ruut has already sent apologies in advance for his absence, as he's propeller-setting around the world on a luxury cruise liner. But still, we'll have fun and laughter to help you on your way.
Hope to see you there!

Tonight! Mini-Fi
Short notice, I know, but h i r 0 and I have been chatting on IM and Munchk has been on the emails and we've all been talking about a Mini-Fi tonight. Munchk may be coming over to mine tonight (Shhh, we'll get pizza) and h i r 0 and Jal will be playing through the tubes from their respective gaffs and we'll do lots and lots of killings. I'm off on holiday tomorrow so I'm going to miss next week's scheduled Fi and I dont want to be called Johnny Missfi.
In summary then:
Mini-Fi, GOW, 8:30 onwards, XBL.

What about that E3 then?
Anyone want to share their favourite links / videos / previews / stories of E3 so far?
I was going to blog it every day but I'm busy and there's a lot going on. I'll sort out some of my favourite links in a bit.
Word of the year: UHSUUUUMMM!

Getting Taxied About
The next issue of GAMES TM magazine has the most in-depth article on GTA IV to date. Filefront.com has scans of the article. This article is fantastically exciting and I'm looking forward to this game far more than Halo 3, to be honest.
I could stick in some bullet-points here but I'll let you read it. The scans are at the bottom of the page.
And Ruut! You're now officially allowed to get excited about this!

Droppin' The Host Post -- July 6th Suckers
Can you count, suckers? I say the next 'fi club is at ours...
...if you can count.
Look what we have here before us.
We've got the h i r 0 e s sitting next to the Coote Street Boys. We've got the Munchk Runners, right by the Van Blitzoid Rangers. Nobody is wasting nobody. That...is a miracle. And miracles is the way things ought to be.
You're standing right now with eight delegates from a hundred gangs. And there's over a hundred more. That's eight thousand hard-core members - counting affiliates, and more not organised, but ready to 'fi.
Eight Thousand Soldiers!
There ain't but two thousand police in thewhole town. Can you dig it? Can you dig it?
Caaaaaan yooooooou dig it?

Rock Band Clip
Cnet.com have a video of Jeff Yapp talking about MTV Network's vision of the future (One World, One Avatar) which includes a clip of Rock Band in action. Looks interesting for sure, but I have concerns about how much the hardware is going to cost over here.
The Rock Band clip follows a fairly nonsensical section showing what looks like "There" rolled into an epilepsy inducing montage of fashion shoots, news clips and music videos. *Spew*
Right... Fcuk the Cnet.com video, here's a complete clip from YouTube...
