'Fi Club this week

I think it's probably my turn, but as we're off to Bristol early on Saturday would someone else mind taking this one for me and I'll do the 15th?

Hmmm, tempted to host. It *is* h i r 0 's turn, but the 15th fits nicely for the H-Man in more than one way.

Rokin.

Fukket, I'll host, it'll be fun. You can laugh and point if Jas and I flee to Chichester in panic half way through.

So yeah, um, yada yada grab your handheld of choice, snacks and nappy sacks and come over for a night of a thousand and one follies, jollies, and lick 'em lollies. A magic fountain flow of non stop wine, women and hotchie cootchie coo! All night long. All night long, all night!!

Or something.

Looks like it. Looks like no one else can be arsed this time. It's now Thursday and no one apart from us has posted since last Friday.

another fi has passed, and alas i cannot make this one too. im desperate to come down, cos i got loads of stuff on ac to share out/swap. i need to place an order for a wireless router so i can go mobile and play via tinterweb. im just too busy/lazy to actually find one thats good enough rating and is compatible with ds/psp...
im at the stage where i need someone to just say ' hey jal... this is the one... this is cool, will work well, costs under a ton, and is easy to install! ' (paste link here) ...

anyways, enjoy your pulp...

Hey Jal... this is the one...

I don't know how your broadband gets into your place, but I use one similar to this: Netgear WG602 54G Access Point

Sure, there may be others better and cheaper, but I can recommend this one.

Jal needs an ADSL modem router. I'll have a look down the compatibility list and see if I can find a UK supplier for some of them.

I know it's more expensive the way I did it at home, but I like the flexibility of having a seperate access point and router set up. My access point is similar to this one and it means I could spend time configuring the wi fi without bringing down my internet connection and could move the access point to the best location in the house regardless of phone line. Sometimes my slate and thinkpads spit the dummy on the wireless link and won't hook up and I can reboot the access point without interrupting the internet connection to fix it -- useful for when we're downloading to the mac or for when we're streaming radio.

Alternatively, you may want an all in one, and again, I really rate the netgear stuff. It seems to be more stable and doesn't roast itself on hot days like my linksys stuff in work.

There are pros and cons for both methods. You've put forward most of the pros and you could add that as he already has a modem it would save duplication of hardware.

In the favour of a single unit you have the advantages of not having to have a computer on to access the 'net via WiFi, and the modem/router also acts as a nice hardware firewall; also you won't have to fiddle with/ rely on XP to route your traffic from your DS to your modem. Windows networking can get a bit funny at times for no particular reason and if your computer breaks completely you'll still be able to access WiFi.

On the downside it does mean you have a single point of failure, but then you'll have your old modem as a backup if it does die.

My ADSL router isn't plugged in to a PC, it's a self contained gateway. It holds the ADSL line up and converts it into ethernet. I was suggesting that Jal might want to consider the two devices as a solution rather than buy a single ADSL/Wifi doofer all in one.

I *used* to have that USB Stingray thingy, but I swapped it for a T610 after I bought the new router.

Now, without any PC being on in the house, I can get net access from the thinkpad, slate, mac mini, my phone (over wifi), the AIBO, my XBox and the VAIOs. I've also got a NAS plugged into the router so all those devices can access music, pics, docs and movies from the NAS itself and a USB hardrive mounted on the NAS.

Ah I see. Even better then, but pricier. Pretty sure Jal's existing modem is a USB job (not a stringray though) so he would need to get both items.

The real cheapo option of course, is to get a USB wifi key. Either one of the Nintendo official product (which won't work with the PSP I expect) or something like this from Lik Sang which will work with both. Watch out for UK Customs duty and VAT on orders over £18 though.

cooooo. thanks for the input guys. i must say right now that 90% of all that went right over my head!
i need the wireless for the ds and psp mainly, and 99% of the time i have my pc on at the same time with my broadband connected, so will look into something that will compliment that situation.
