Ain't Nothing Going On But The Rent

British Gaming Blog are reporting that GAME are to start a rental system.

GAME Rentals allows you to borrow up to 2 games at a time for a small monthly subscription. There are no late fees - when you want to try a new game just return one of the ones you’ve already played.

The service offers two subscription levels. The first allows for one game at a time for £9.99 a month, while the second allows two games at a time for £14.99 a month.

Here's a link to GAME's rental page where they're offering a 10-day free trial period if you sign up now.

I need to Do The Maths (natch) to see if it's worth it for me, but on the face of things you get to have a premium title for £20 for two months which is easily long enough for a single-player game like Fable 2, or to ride the initial wave of interest in a multiplayer like Gears 2 or L4D.

Looking at it another way. Who of us spend more than £120 a month, or even £180 for the 2-game deal? I know I do, but then I also sell on used titles which allows me to recoup. Hmmm.... where's that calculator.

Wonder if they'll send me the Rock Band II band in a box?

Here's the science bit.

Out of a booming year of Xbox gaming... check out this list:

Orange Box
Bioshock
GTA IV
Mass Effect
Too Human
Mercs 2
Burnout Paradise
Fable 2
Left 4 Dead
Fallout 3

I've paid approx £285 for that lot and recouped £36, meaning my net cost of gaming for the year was £249. I could further reduce that by selling the newer games but they're not done yet.

I think I can justify the £15/mo tarrif. If it's not working out I'll just stop. If I find a game that I simply must keep (like Burnout) then I will send it back, get another and buy it.

Anyone see any downsides?

Nice idea, crap selection.

Looking at Lovefilm for the New Year. I've got loads going on at the moment, and more on my Christmas list, so no rush.

where's the choice list? They dont really push it much on their web site.

There is no list, that's strike one. I had to go through the 360 A-Z list, clicking on likely titles. Frankly it's a no-goer from start to finish.

Strike 2 is it has no new titles to rent. No Mirrors Edge, no tombraider, no Far Cry 2.

Strike 3 is that I have too much to play at the moment anyway. I don't need a bunch of second-tier titles turning up on my doormat.

Lovefilm have new titles for rent, and you can get a DVD / Game combo account from £9.87/mo for up to 4 'changes' a month.

Nice 'shop.

I could tell by the pixels, but it was still well done.

Plus, I've seen a few, so I know.

I 'shopped the name and the spots, but after I posted it I noticed he was flipping the bird all along.

Check the game site -- it's true! Yes!

I like the honesty in marketing there, I always felt they were hiding a middle finger on me when I asked them questions...
