Sony Killing LBP Levels Without Warning

From Wired Blog

LittleBigPlanet lets gamers create their own worlds, but some say that its developer is cracking down much too harshly on potentially infringing content.

Amateur level designers say that the developer of Sony's recently-released PlayStation 3 game has been yanking their creations from the servers if the levels contain references to existing television shows or videogames. And once the levels are gone, users aren't given the opportunity to remove the offending content and republish -- they've got to start from scratch.

Sounds about right for Sony.

I can't say in this litigious day and age I can blame Sony for removing this content. Check your EULA if you don't like it - I bet everything you upload belongs to Sony.

It looks like you can create local copies of your own and other's levels anyway, so remember to back up before uploading, and if you come across a user-created level that you think might get pulled, remember to save it to your own moon before it gets scrubbed.

You'd think I was interested in PS3 games or something, wouldn't you?

I think the complaints lie more with the fact that they just destroy the levels rather than offer to re-instate after modification.

Then I'd say all that is needed is some kind of warning when uploading that you should keep a local copy in case of rejection.

Then you can modify it and upload it again when it's ready.

Although, I grant you, reading the comments that if you don't know why it was pulled, it's going to be hard to modify it.

Out of interest, do they allow adult themes? What about satirical themes? Satire is fair use.

Sensationalist headline (on Wired) is misleading.

Wired headline "Sony Killing Questionable Little Big Planet Levels..." (my bold)

Article says (correctly): "the developer of Sony's recently-released PlayStation 3 game has been yanking their creations from the servers"

"If a level is found to be in violation of the EULA it will be moderated," said the game's senior community development manager in a forum response.

So, it's Media Molecule doing the removal, not Big Bad Evil Sony (god, am I really defending Sony?)

And finally: "just because they didn't read the fine print on the EULA."

Just because?? When was the last time you assumed an EULA was going to be kind to you?

BTW, what is that sticking up in front of Sackboy? Barrymore hasn't struck again has he?

Just when it had started going smoothly for Sony as well.

LOL

Seriously though, those creating levels should have thought that "dodgy" content (of any kind) would be subject to some kind of moderation.
It's not really a surprise that some have been pulled off! (F'nar F'nar)
